Din Tai Fung is one of those places we return to knowing exactly which dishes need to hit the table. The dining room always feels busy, the dumpling window turns dinner into part show and the food comes out in a rhythm that makes sharing everything the right move.
The Kurobuta pork xiao long bao are the reason the meal starts here. Each one is folded around savory pork and hot broth, so the first bite is really a sip, a little ginger and then the dumpling.
Lana’s order is the spicy chicken wontons. The chili oil sauce is the part that keeps pulling us back, and it is good enough to spoon over anything else left on the table.
Then we finish with the chocolate and mochi xiao long bao. The warm chocolate center and chewy mochi layer turn the same delicate dumpling format into dessert. They are an LDK favorite for a reason.
This place is DTF, and we mean that as the highest compliment.
It is polished enough for a date and casual enough to order a table full of dumplings at the mall. The only real obstacle is getting in, which is why the bar line and takeout move matter.

Before the dumplings, there was cooking oil.
Din Tai Fung began in Taipei in 1958 as a cooking oil shop. It became a restaurant in 1972 and built its name around xiao long bao, the carefully folded soup dumplings still made behind the glass window today.
From oil shop to dumpling iconWhat we ordered at Din Tai Fung
These are the three dishes we would build the visit around again.
Kurobuta pork xiao long bao
Hand folded soup dumplings filled with seasoned Kurobuta pork and hot broth. This is an LDK favorite and the order we would never skip.
Spicy chicken wontons
Tender chicken wontons covered in a savory chili oil sauce. Lana’s favorite of the table and the dish worth saving extra sauce from.
Chocolate and mochi xiao long bao
Warm chocolate truffle and chewy mochi inside Din Tai Fung’s signature folded wrapper. Order these for the table and eat them carefully while the center is hot.
The details worth knowing
Try the bar line
Reservations disappear quickly. For a first come, first served bar seat, look for the single file line beside the dumpling making window.
Use the takeout hack
Order pickup, then take the food to one of the public tables around Westfield UTC when you want the dumplings without the dining room wait.
Share the order
Most of the fun is trying several dishes. Build the meal around a few baskets, wontons and one dessert instead of ordering individually.
Confirm the current hours
The official location page lists the UTC restaurant at 4301 La Jolla Village Drive. Check current hours and reservation availability before heading over.
