When Yelp keeps bringing up the same pizza place, eventually you have to see what the hype is about. We visited Gnarly Girl Pizza while the Princess Peach and Chicken Wonton pizzas were back by popular demand.
Both pies delivered the creative, anything but ordinary experience we expected. Then we reached the crust. Gnarly Girl turns the edge of the pizza into garlic knots, and that detail made the whole order feel like an event instead of just another pizza night.
It is over the top in the best way possible and unlike anything we have had before.
If your usual order is a plain cheese or pepperoni, this is where to get a little more adventurous. The signature crust is the part we would tell someone to try at least once.
Pizza that refuses to be ordinary
Gnarly Girl Pizza builds its identity around creative specialty pies, a colorful neighborhood shop and the signature Gnarly Knot crust. The current menu also offers New York style, Sicilian style and cauliflower crust options.
The crust is part of the experienceWhat we tried
We tried two returning specialty pizzas. Availability changes, so check the current specials before planning your order around either one.
Gnarly Knot crust
The signature garlic knot edge was the most memorable part of the visit and the detail that made the pizza unlike anything we had tried before.
Princess Peach
One of the specialty pizzas that brought us in after it returned by popular demand.
Chicken Wonton
The second returning specialty pie that showed how far Gnarly Girl is willing to push the usual pizza formula.
The details worth knowing
Check the specials
The Princess Peach and Chicken Wonton were limited returns during our visit and may not always be available.
Choose the crust
The signature Gnarly Knot crust is available on thin crust pies. The current menu also lists New York, Sicilian and cauliflower options.
Leave time for parking
Parking was a recurring concern in responses to our reel, so give yourself extra time around El Cajon Boulevard.
