Eggplant with honey and ravioli were not the two dishes I expected to be talking about after a meal in Peru’s Sacred Valley. But those were the standouts at Kampu, and they are where I would start if you asked me what to order.
We tried six dishes, so this was a chance to see several sides of the menu. Chicken satay, Peru Thai ceviche, eggplant fried with honey, ravioli, chicken curry and a recommended beef special all made it into our order. It was a mix that made more sense once the owner started explaining the food.
The conversation mattered.
The owner took time to walk us through the menu and the thinking behind the dishes. That made choosing dinner feel more personal. I appreciated getting that context from the person creating the food, especially at a restaurant where the menu does not fit neatly into one cuisine.
Kampu brings Peruvian ingredients into dishes influenced by food from different parts of the world. Our order moved from satay and curry to ravioli, with the Peru Thai ceviche in between. I would go into this meal ready to ask questions rather than looking for one familiar category.
My starting picks.
The eggplant fried with honey caught our attention immediately. The ravioli did too. Those are the two plates I would make space for first, then ask what the kitchen recommends that day. Our beef dish came through a recommendation, so it is worth having that conversation before deciding on your whole order.
My first question at Kampu would be what the owner wants you to try today.
This is the kind of meal I enjoy finding while traveling: a place with its own point of view, where talking about the menu becomes part of dinner. If your Sacred Valley plans include time in Urubamba, Kampu is a restaurant I would put on your list for that personal touch as much as the food.
Travel finds its way into the kitchen.
Chef Eduardo’s cooking reflects his travels, with ideas drawn from Indonesia, Thailand, Africa and Peru, according to Fodor’s restaurant guide. That background gives Kampu a personal identity beyond a single cuisine.
Six dishes. Two immediate standouts.
Eggplant fried with honey
One of our immediate standouts and a dish I would point you toward first.
Ravioli
The other plate that stood out in our order.
Chicken satay
One of the starters we chose while exploring the menu.
Peru Thai ceviche
Part of our group’s order, showing another side of Kampu’s approach.
Chicken curry
Our curry choice among the six dishes we tried.
Beef special
A recommended dish from our visit. Ask what the kitchen is offering when you go.
A few things I would keep in mind.
Find it in Urubamba
Kampu is at Jirón Sagrario 342, behind the cathedral. The restaurant occupies a traditional home arranged around a central courtyard.
Ask for guidance
Tell the team about dietary needs and ask about the day’s recommendations. Our beef special came from their suggestion.
