The Little Italy Mercato turns an ordinary grocery run into a full San Diego morning. The tents stretch through the neighborhood, the Little Italy sign frames the walk and every block gives you another reason to stop.
We went looking for local finds and came away with a table full of them. Sourdough, burrata, nut butters, cookies, olive oil and flowers made this feel less like one purchase and more like building the perfect weekend spread.
This is the kind of market where you arrive for one thing and leave planning what you will try next time.
The Saturday market is the full experience. It is busy, social and worth walking slowly so you do not miss the vendors tucked farther down Date Street.
A market built for Little Italy
The Little Italy Mercato began in 2008 through a partnership between market founder Catt Fields White and the Little Italy Association. It has grown into San Diego County’s largest farmers market, with more than 200 vendors at the Saturday market.

Swells Sourdough
A beautiful market loaf and an easy anchor for everything else we brought home.
A Mano Burrata
Fresh burrata that turns the bread, oil and produce into an instant spread.
Sequoia Nut Butters
A lineup of sweet and savory jars that caught our attention while we walked the market.
Cookies and More
Mayahso cookies, local olive oil, snack bites and flowers rounded out the haul.
Build your own market spread
Our favorite way to experience the Mercato is to shop across several vendors instead of treating it like one food stop. Start with bread and cheese, add something sweet, then finish with flowers or one pantry find you have not tried before.
What we would do again: Go back with time to walk every block, talk to the vendors and leave room in the bag for whatever looks best that morning.
The details worth knowing
Choose the big market
Saturday runs from 8 AM to 2 PM across six blocks of West Date Street. This is the largest version with more than 200 vendors.
Try Wednesday for a shorter visit
The Wednesday market runs from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM on West Date Street between Kettner Boulevard and State Street.
Plan for crowds
The market is open year round, rain or shine. Arrive earlier for an easier walk and more time with the vendors.
Admission: Walking the market is free. What you spend depends entirely on what comes home with you.
Parking: Little Italy fills quickly on market mornings. Walking, taking the trolley or using a nearby paid garage can be easier than circling the neighborhood.
