The Gym San Diego is not trying to feel polished or corporate. It is loud, gritty and packed with the kind of equipment and people that make you want to train harder.
Lana had a membership for a year and loved it for leg days, shoulder days and back days. The outdoor area made it possible to finish an entire workout in the San Diego sun while becoming, in her words, a golden bronzed beauty.
Kyle liked training here and had a membership too, but it was not the right everyday gym for what he wanted. He eventually switched to another local gym while still appreciating what makes this place special.
The energy comes from the people, the music and a room full of lifters who actually want to be there.
People say hello. Regulars talk to each other between sets. The music is bumping, and the community feels more welcoming than the hardcore reputation might suggest. Even the walk inside has personality, thanks to the fur babies relaxing near the entrance while their owners train.
A piece of Pacific Beach bodybuilding history
The gym traces its roots to 1986, when George Jackson and Rick Stephenson took over a closed Gold’s Gym licensee in Pacific Beach. The operation later grew from about 3,000 square feet to more than 25,000 square feet at its current Garnet Avenue location.

Leg Day
This is where Lana gets some of her favorite leg workouts. The range of machines makes it easy to build a full session without repeating the usual routine.
Shoulders
The equipment selection gives you plenty of ways to press, raise and isolate without relying on one standard setup.
Back Day
Serious lifters and a deep equipment lineup make this an especially motivating place to train back.
Train Outside
Take part or all of the workout outdoors for sunshine, fresh air and the most distinctly San Diego part of the gym.
Lana’s reaction: Inspiring enough to be her everyday gym for a year. She loved the people, the outdoor area and the workouts she could build here.
Kyle’s reaction: A good gym with a memorable atmosphere, but not the best match for his everyday training preferences.
The outdoor training area
The outdoor space is what turns The Gym San Diego from another equipment filled gym into a true Pacific Beach experience. You can keep the workout moving while getting fresh air and sunshine.
What we would do again: Lana would happily return for another leg, shoulder or back workout. Kyle would return for an occasional session, even though he prefers another gym for daily training.
The details worth knowing
Pick your pass
A day pass is $20 and a week pass is $50. Memberships are $150 for three months, $250 for six months and $400 for one year.
Time the parking lot
The lot can back up quickly. Arrive outside the busiest training hours or be prepared to wait for someone to leave.
Know the setup
There are bathrooms on both floors, showers in the second floor locker rooms and a dedicated posing room.
Community space: The small lounge has a microwave, plenty of cubbies and big leather couches for settling in before or after a workout.
Pass note: Ask whether the cost of your day pass can still be applied toward a three month, six month or annual membership.
