We came for coffee, but The Shop gave us a much stronger reason to remember it. The room feels like part of Barrio Logan rather than a polished concept placed inside the neighborhood.

Lowrider culture is woven into the visual identity, and the space continues to bring people together through special events, fundraisers, music and local collaborations. That connection gave our visit more meaning than a typical coffee run.

The Shop is the kind of place where the story, the people and the neighborhood become part of the experience.

We love visiting businesses where there is something to learn beyond the menu. Here, the atmosphere and community purpose gave us reasons to talk about the place long after the coffee was gone.

This is not only somewhere to grab a drink and leave. Give yourself time to notice the room, understand what the business supports and experience a piece of Barrio Logan while you are there.

BEHIND THE STOP

Miguel and Bonnie turned a mechanics shop into more

During our visit, we met owners Miguel and Bonnie Alatorre. Miguel shared that when a friend’s nearby coffee shop was in danger of not making it through the pandemic, he turned part of the mechanics shop into a café. That decision created a coffee space inside a place already rooted in lowrider culture and the neighborhood.

Miguel is a military veteran, and The Shop continues to support veterans who still need help. The café also makes room for music, fundraisers, special events and local collaborations. The coffee brings people through the door, but the people, culture and purpose give the space its identity.

WHAT WE TRIED

Two iced drinks and one reason to return.

KYLE’S ORDER

Pumpkin Cold Foam Cold Brew

Kyle went for the pumpkin cold foam cold brew, pairing a dark cold brew with a creamy seasonal topping.

NEXT TIME

Tatas Latte

The Shop regularly features this signature drink as one of its staples. We somehow missed it during our visit, which gives us an easy reason to return.

What we would order next: The signature Tatas Latte.

03
