Treehouse is tucked into a part of Sorrento Mesa where you would not necessarily expect to find one of San Diego’s most comfortable places to open a laptop. Once we walked in, it felt less like a quick coffee stop and more like somewhere we could settle in for the day.

There is plenty of seating inside and outside, but the oversized patio couches are what made the space stand out for us. They face an open view over the surrounding valley, and the mix of sunshine, fresh air and room to spread out made working together feel genuinely enjoyable.

This is the kind of place that makes a workday feel like an outing.

It is free to use the seating, so there is no separate coworking charge. We simply ordered drinks and found a spot. The catch is that other people have discovered it too. The best couches fill quickly, especially once the morning gets moving.

We also noticed dedicated bicycle storage tucked away from the main seating area, which was a thoughtful detail for anyone commuting by bike. Between that, the comfortable furniture and the range of food and drinks available, Treehouse feels designed for people who want to stay longer than one cup.

BEHIND THE STOP

The chef behind Treehouse came home with a serious résumé.

Executive Chef Enrique Guzman grew up in the border town of Calexico and found his passion for San Diego’s food scene during his first culinary job at Basic Pizza. His career later took him to Napa, where he worked under Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto and spent two years learning at The French Laundry. After cooking around the country and leading kitchens at the University of San Diego, he returned to the local restaurant scene to lead Treehouse.

WHAT WE GOT

Two seasonal drinks and one important distinction.

We tried two fall drinks while we worked outside. The flavors were fun, but Lana’s order also came with a tea lesson.

KYLE’S ORDER

Witch’s Brew

Kyle went with the Witch’s Brew, the darker seasonal drink in our photos. It fit the fall theme and was the drink he chose for our patio work session.

LANA’S ORDER

Pumpkin Cheesecake Hojicha

Lana ordered the pumpkin cheesecake hojicha. It was explained to her as similar to matcha, but hojicha is roasted green tea and tastes distinctly different. If you are expecting the grassy flavor and bright color of matcha, this is not the same experience.

NEED TO KNOW

Plan your work session.

01

Come early for the couches

The patio has tables and lounge seating, but the largest couches fill quickly. Earlier is better if comfort is the reason you are coming.

02

Bring layers

The outdoor space is one of the best parts, but Sorrento Mesa mornings can feel cool before the sun reaches the patio.

03

Check the current hours

The coffee and beverage bar currently lists weekday service, while food counters can have different hours. Check Treehouse directly before making a dedicated trip.

04

Stay for more than coffee

The market, breakfast options and lunch menu make it easy to turn a quick drink into a longer work session.
